Random thoughts #1298

Where did the phrase "life and times," as in The Life and Times of [insert biography subject], originate? We sometimes ask, "How's life treating you?" or, "What's new in your life?" but I've never heard anyone say, "How are the times?" or, "Any new times lately?" That just sounds silly. So where does it come from?
