I'm officially a gigantic loser.

Today was my first of four days subbing for my student teaching co-op, who's going to Florida with her family. I arrived at school at 7:05 this morning to find the parking lot completely empty. There was a little snow on the ground, but I was surprised that no one else was there. I'd even checked the school's website before I left, and it didn't say anything about a delay.

So I called home and asked mom to use my laptop to check the site again and to double-check the local radio station's site. Still nothing. I drove around to the front of the school, where I saw two cars parked. I went inside the building and saw a light on in the back of the office. I found the assistant principal, who greeted me with a wary "Hiii" that sounded more like a question than a salutation.

"Um, what's going on?" I asked, biting my lower lip.

"Didn't anybody call you this morning?"

"No... Is it a one or two-hour delay?"

"No, no, honey -- school is closed today," she said and frowned sympathetically. "But hey, now you can go back to bed! You live close by, right?"

I chuckled and told her I'd just driven half an hour to school.

Luckily, she felt very sorry for me. So sorry, in fact, that she found boring clerical work for me to do and paid me for half a day's work! Hey, I won't complain about filling out detention slips and shredding papers for $50!

But seriously, am I cursed with bad luck or what? Who else goes to school when there is no school? I even got up early at 5:15 to wash my hair. Garrrgh. The nice thing is that I got to spend the afternoon snuggling with Bryan. Horray for snow days.

You should have shredded the detention slips too. Would have earned you brownie points with the bad kids. Wait...maybe that's a bad thing....
